We Chinese: China’s Unemployed Youth Pretend to Work in Libraries, Cafes

With youth unemployment hovering around 17%, many young Chinese are trying to give their day structure by spending their time at cafes, libraries, or renting study desks as they apply for jobs, make social media videos, or just hide from relatives who think they are at work.

“I’ve polished my resume so much, it blinds even me.”

“Every day I ‘commute’ to a cafe, sip one coffee for six hours, and stare at a blank Word document. The barista calls me ‘Manager Zhang.’ Even I am beginning to believe him. Yesterday, I asked everyone in the cafe to fill out a monthly sales report.”

“Every day I put on a suit and tie just to sit in a study room. I’m basically a cosplayer, except my character is a corporate drone.”
