HUZHONG — Multiple sources confirm a local man, Lau Chi-wai, 44, has imposed a strict embargo on his own household after repeatedly catching his wife secretly bringing foreign beef into the home, despite his long-standing domestic supply. According to neighbors, Chan Mei-yan, 39, had been frequenting markets across town in recent months, examining different cuts and styles of meat before smuggling them back while her husband was away, sometimes arranging discreet deliveries. “She thought I didn’t know about her trips to market in Xiahucun or Zhongfangzhen,” Lau said, explaining that he became suspicious after discovering unfamiliar plastic wrapping in the trash, clearly marked Uruguay, Argentina, and even the United States. “Once she told me she was going to get her hair done, but then I saw her in Ningde checking out some huge cuts of meat from Brazil. I couldn’t believe it.” Lau noted that he has raised cattle on their four mu of land since the early years of their 21-year marriage and said he was confused by his wife’s sudden interest in outside beef. “Why would anyone want imported meat when there’s good, reliable beef right here at home?” he asked. In response, Lau said he has implemented a comprehensive enforcement regime, including indoor security cameras and paying a neighborhood boy to call him if he sees Chan come home with anything that looks like a huge piece of meat. At press time, it was rumored that Chan was last seen buying some octopus from Japan.
