We Chinese: Tai Po Investigatory Committee Will Lack Subpoena Power

The death toll from the Tai Po fire has risen to 161 after DNA testing revealed that remains previously thought to be one victim belonged to two people, while Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said that an independent review committee will be established to investigate the causes of the fire, although the body will not have the legal authority to call witnesses, a decision outgoing Hong Kong lawmaker Doreen Kong has publicly disagreed with.

What do you think?

“We are optimistic that continued DNA analysis may yet consolidate the victims into a single individual that no one really knew, and nobody misses.”

“On the other hand, even if the committee did have the authority to summon witnesses, anyone even remotely responsible would be conveniently ‘unavailable’.”

“Yeah, my grandmother never did trust tall buildings.”
