We Chinese: Chinese Censors Delete Fried Rice Memes Linked to Death of Mao’s Son

Chinese authorities have censored online memes posted to social media about egg fried rice because they might have been referring to the death of Mao Zedong’s son in the 1950-1953 Korean War, the anniversary of which is humorously referred to as “China’s Thanksgiving.”.

What do you think?

“We teach students that Mao Anying was a hero, but we skip over his cooking skills. It’s a sensitive topic — like how we gloss over the Great Leap Forward with, uh, a great leap forward.”

“I stopped posting fried rice recipes after the comments got too heated. These days, I stick to congee. Nobody ever got censored for boiling water.”

“The hardest part of my job is deciding if a fried rice meme is a recipe or a rebellion. Either way, I’ll be having plain noodles for dinner.”
