A new poll, conducted last year, shows overwhelming public approval for the vaguely worded communiqué issued yesterday to mark the end of the historic Third Plenum.
“China will continue unswervingly on its path of empty rhetoric and entrenched self-interest,” said an anonymous spokesman yesterday, as leaders relaxed after three hours of intense negotiations over who gets what.
The poll shows:
76% think the government is doing a good job
12% think the government is doing a “very good job”
8% are illiterate
12% think political reform is necessary and urgent
48% think there should be less political reform
31% think China is “already far too democratic and we need to bring back Mao”
8% are illiterate
85% of women love deep reform
62% of women urge for “deeper, longer, harder reform”
8% are illiterate
