We Chinese: ‘Stranger Things’ Outperforms ‘The Northwest Years’ in China

CCTV’s ‘The Northwest Years’ is failing to capture domestic audiences’ attention, as well as losing the online social media war to American TV show ‘Stranger Things’

I get the appeal of ‘The Northwest Years’—like, dusty old-timey outfits, inspiring quotes, and battles where everyone’s loyalty is beyond question. But can they match the thrill of kids on bikes with supernatural powers? Plus, with ‘Stranger Things,’ I don’t feel guilty if I skip an episode. Try explaining that to your Party Committee.

‘The Northwest Years’ is exciting, I’m sure, but there’s something thrilling about a show where heroes are running from literal monsters instead of ideological ones. And anyway, I know how ‘The Northwest Years’ ends—spoiler alert: loyalty to the Party. Not quite the plot twist I’m looking for.

It’s perplexing, really. ‘The Northwest Years’ has everything young people should want in a show: history, sacrifice, loyalty—why would they prefer an American show with teenage rebels fighting imaginary creatures? Clearly, our youth need more guidance if they’d rather spend their time following something called a ‘Demogorgon’ than our country’s glorious past. Maybe a few more viewing sessions at the office will help them see the light.
