We Chinese: Democracy Activist, Jimmy Lai, Could Face Life Imprisonment After Conviction

After spending five years in custody, much of it in solitary confinement since his 2020 arrest, 78-year-old Jimmy Lai, the founder of Apple Daily, was convicted by a three-judge panel in Hong Kong of conspiring to collude with foreign forces under the national security law and of conspiracy to publish seditious materials; his 156-day trial produced an 855-page verdict in which Judge Esther Toh said Lai had extended a “constant invitation” to the U.S. to help bring down the ruling Communist Party, and, although sentencing has not yet been imposed, Lai could face life imprisonment.

What do you think?

“You know, I feel like I should just double-check any recent invitations I’ve sent out.”

“Eight-hundred fifty-five pages? Nobody’s going to read all that.”

“Those Communists don’t let you get away with anything.”
