We Chinese: China To Establish Nature Preserve On Contested Scarborough Shoal

In an effort to further solidify control over the disputed South China Sea feature, Beijing has issued approval to create a national nature preserve surrounding the Scarborough Shoal, calling the move an “important guarantee for maintaining the diversity, stability, and sustainability of the atoll’s natural ecosystem,” although the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague has ruled international law does not support China’s claim to the territory.

What do you think?

“Ugh, I can just imagine the first environmental impact statement to come out of this: ‘Coral bleaching with Chinese characteristics'”.

“I’m sure biodiversity will continue to thrive once the ecosystem is patrolled 24 hours a day by diesel engines and sonar blasts.”

“Has anyone tried telling Beijing that Scarborough Shoal is 800 kilometres from Hainan, but only 220 kilometres from Luzon? Talk about reach goals.
