BEIJING – Dissident’s wife Liu Xia doesn’t have much in her life – her husband, Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo, was jailed for 11 years for ‘state subversion’ and she herself has been under illegal house arrest ever since.
But she is looking forward to meeting America’s First Lady, who arrives in China this week on a “person-to-person” goodwill tour. Michelle Obama’s husband, President Barack Obama, also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011.
“We have so much in common,” Liu Xia told this reporter. “Both of are married to Nobel prizewinners. And neither of us gets to see them that much.”
Liu added that, although the First Lady’s entourage had yet to be in contact about arranging a meet, she was sure it was only a matter of time.
“Well, I’m not going anywhere,” Liu said. “I can’t.”
Speaking from behind the door of her guarded Beijing apartment, Liu added that the First Lady’s visit would be a great honor for China. “After all,” Liu said, “this is not just a vacuous PR trip to burnish the Xi administration with Michelle’s presidential glamour.
“By the way, have you heard anything yet?”
