BEIJING (China Daily Show) – A freelance journalist who has prepared an in-depth scoop about the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre is simply waiting for the right time to file it, friends said yesterday.
Elizabeth Koch, 43, confirmed she is now patiently counting down the days to 4 June, 2014, which will mark the quarter-century anniversary of the infamously bloody crushing by PLA troops and tanks in Beijing’s central square of the 1989 democracy movement.
“I have done all the interviews and checked all the sources. I just need the right date,” Koch said.
“The story’s actually been ready a while now, but I can’t actually do anything until next year.
“Thing is, nobody really cares about awkward anniversaries like the 19th, 20th, 21st and so forth,” Koch added. “Everyone knows it’s only multiples of five and ten that really matter.”
Ironically, Koch admitted that she did write a boilerplate blog about this year’s 24th anniversary, mainly because of the number.
“Four is considered a symbol of death in China,” Koch explained, “mainly because the character for ‘four’ also looks the same as the one for ‘tank massacre.’”
