We Chinese: North Korea Cracks Down On Cross-Border Phone Calls With Handheld Scanners

Using new, high-performance German-made signal detectors, North Korean border guards have improved their ability to block and pinpoint the locations of citizens making illegal international phone calls—even as some attempt to hide in the mountains and forests to place calls to family members in South Korea and defectors abroad—while anyone caught discussing the price of rice is accused of spying, with punishments including being sent to detention or labor camps, and a sentence of political prison for those sharing news of internal events.

What do you think?

“I used to go to the Myohyang Mountains to get away for the weekend with my husband. Now, I have to climb 1,500 meters just to talk with my sister in Sangju.”

“Figures the Germans would be helping put people into camps.”

“Getting sent to prison as a spy just for talking about rice? Great, it’ll be just my luck to get locked up with James Bond a second time.
